Lotto or Casino, which is better?

Lotto is the Italians favourite game. But is it really very fair? Let’s clarify what we mean by “fairness”. A game is said to be fair, when payments issued exactly reflect the player’s chances of winning, so when players receive back (in the long run) 100% of what they spend.

Obviously, no game is entirely fair, because there must be a margin of mathematical gain for the operator, who otherwise would have no interest in investing money. That being said, the closer a game comes to being equitable (100%), the more advantageous it is for the player.

Here are a few examples:

  • Blackjack, on average, pays back 98.5%
  • Roulette pays back approximately 97.3%
  • An Online Slot Machine (on a site authorized by AAMS) pays back on average 96%
  • Scratch and win” at or around 80% (average value, because they all have different rules)

So now, let’s take a look at the odds of winning a game of LOTTO.

I don’t mean to imply by this that you shouldn’t play at Lotto. I’m just saying that, before playing, you ought to know where your favourite game is placed in the equity ranking.

Lotto is one of the most popular and well-loved games in Italy. One that no-one is ashamed to admit playing. No-one will accuse you of being a problem gambler because you regularly try your hand at Lotto, the way they might if you were to become an habitué of the local casino.

Going into your local corner shop for a Lotto ticket seems much more ordinary, doesn’t it? Yet betting the same amount of money and the same number of bets, statistically, would be more worthwhile at the blackjack tables than through Lotto.

I know, that’s a controversial thing to say. Very controversial, especially for people easily influenced by the media and advertising. Very objectionable. Almost disgusting, but it’s the truth. The numbers speak for themselves.

Now you are in a position to choose more responsibly where to spend your cash if you decide to have a little flutter. Bear this information in mind, together with your personal preferences when you are deciding how best to gamble. Enjoy your gaming. And if you decide you still want to play Lotto, do it and have fun! But always play responsibly. Now you can do it a little more easily, because you can only take “responsible” decisions on the basis of correct information.
